Farewell, April

Today was a special day for several reasons. First of all, it was my Dad's birthday! We called him twice and left messages, but unfortunately didn't get to talk to him. I suppose he's out celebrating with friends. Secondly, today was the day that our offer was accepted on the house we found!! We are so excited to see what God has in store for us in a new city, new house, and new church home. Thirdly, today was the last day of April, our last April in this house. It's bittersweet.

Johnny is dressed in his basketball uniform. Ha! He says "B ball" for basketball. It cracks me up!

Robby is really in to batting right now and it's lots of fun! He is really becoming a good hitter!

Cute little Johnny. He hasn't felt well for two days, but still has enjoyed playing outside.

It's a Hit!

Bouquet

Robby loves to pick flowers for me. Isn't this a pretty bouquet? It is setting on our kitchen table and makes a lovely centerpiece.

Obey

Last night after Cubbies, I read to Robby and Johnny this week's lesson for AWANA. I introduced the verse for this week: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord." Johnny picked up on one word only and said it over and over and over again: "Obey!" Now, if he will just practice that! Ha!

Johnny's First Hair Cut

Well, today was finally the day. I absolutely love Johnny's curly hair and really didn't want to get it cut. Today, Bobby decided it was definitely time when he saw Johnny twirling his own hair with his fingers. Ha! The above picture shows the end result. He still has a couple curls and definitely waves in his hair.

I took this picture of Johnny in our yard just before we left for Super Cuts.

Johnny happily walking to the van . . . totally unaware of what is awaiting him. Ha!

We had planned to have Johnny sit on Daddy's lap (like Robby did for his first hair cut), but that lasted about one minute. He kept reaching for me and saying, "Mommy! Mommy!"

Poor little Johnny was not a happy camper throughout this hair cut. He squirmed, screamed, and shouted, "Down! Down! Down!" I don't know how in the world Marcella managed to cut his hair without cutting off an ear, but she did just fine.

Well, this position worked for awhile. :) No more haircuts for Johnny for quite awhile!!!

Cowboy

Soccer Practice

Bubbles!

Johnny is getting pretty good at blowing bubbles now. I love to hear him say, "Mama, babuls!" which means he wants to blow bubbles. :)

Wow, two at a time! Ha!

Warner Park

Jan gave us tickets to the zoo today. We had a wonderful time with her and Andrew.

Robby likes this part of the zoo. I wish they allowed children to ride the miniature horses, but at least they can reach through the fence and pet them. They are so cute.

The boys with the chimps.

Wild man Johnny. :)

Friday, April 18, 2008

I was looking at this family photo the other day, so decided to post it. My younger sister, Sam, and brother, Tommy, were born 7 & 9 years after me, so of course they are not in this picture.
Sherri is just 14 months older than me. Our Mom dressed us alike quite often. I loved these pretty matching red dresses.

Farewell, Playground

Johnny can get up and down the step ladders pretty well now. Unfortunately, we are not moving the playset with us, so he will not be able to enjoy it much longer. We sold it today, as a matter of fact. We so enjoyed building this playset three years ago when Robby was exactly Johnny's current age. The boys have thoroughly enjoyed it. Ahhhhhh, sweet memories. :)

Widows & Lepers

Luke 4:25-27

25 But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land;
26 and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.

I Kings 17:1-24

9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there; behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”
12 But she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar; and behold, I am gathering a few sticks that I may go in and prepare for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.”
13 Then Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go, do as you have said, but make me a little bread cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son.
14 For thus says the LORD God of Israel, ‘The bowl of flour shall not be exhausted, nor shall the jar of oil be empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain on the face of the earth.’”
15 So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she and he and her household ate for many days.
16 The bowl of flour was not exhausted nor did the jar of oil become empty, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke through Elijah.
17 Now it came about after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe, that there was no breath left in him.
22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah, and the life of the child returned to him and he revived.
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.”

II Kings 5:1-17

1 Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man with his master, and highly respected, because by him the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man was also a valiant warrior, but he was a leper.
14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
17 “ . . . for your servant will no more offer burnt offering nor will he sacrifice to other gods, but to the LORD.”

While reading the passage in Luke, I couldn’t help but turn to these particular passages in Kings to reread the full stories mentioned. Several things jumped out at me when I read these accounts:
  • God sees us as individuals
  • God fully knows and understands our circumstances
  • God deals with us differently

There were “many widows in Israel” and “many lepers in Israel.” I want to emphasize “many.” Why did God choose just one widow for Elijah to minister to? Furthermore, why did He also choose to minister to that same widow again and heal her son? He did two very amazing miracles in that one widow’s life! Her words shed light: “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.”
I have to ask myself, “Do I KNOW that the word of the LORD is true?” If I know that it is, and of course His word IS true, then is my faith evident in how I think and respond to my circumstances?

Regarding Naaman, I think it is significant what verse 1 mentions about him. He was captain of the army of the king of Aram, he was a great man, highly respected, victorious, and a valiant warrior. BUT, “he was a leper.” So why did God do a miracle in his life? Look at verse 17 again: “ . . . for your servant will no more offer burnt offering nor will he sacrifice to other gods, but to the LORD.”

Overwhelmingly, it is all about God, not us or our circumstances. The widow had nothing and Naaman seemingly had it all, yet both had desperate needs. God chose to work mightily in their lives and accomplished His purposes: testimony that the word of the Lord is true and God is the only true God.

An application for me is that God works differently in lives and I shouldn’t expect Him to do the same miracles for me that He does in the lives of others. It is easy to compare myself to others when I am in the midst of a trial. It’s tempting to complain inwardly that God is not “rescuing” me as He did a friend or acquaintance, that He’s not acting quick enough to please me, or He doesn’t love me like He does another. It’s wrong thinking and it leads to wrong behavior. The truth is that God does love me as much as He loves you or anybody! He provides trials to mature me and build my faith in Him. The kind of trial, as well as the duration, is totally up to God.

These passages in the Bible really ministered to me, particularly at this time as we are in a new phase of selling our home, i.e. under contract. Why God let our house remain on the market for so many months is, quite honestly, a mystery, but I can see His hand in it and thank Him for His perfect timing.

Warm Days are Fun Days

Robby just loves to ride in the go-cart with Bradley, Lindy, and Jason. I took this picture of them after they zipped around the neighborhood. I can't tell if Jason had fun or not. Ha!

Step by Step

We decided to rearrange one of the flower beds in the backyard. I really like these stones we collected several years ago, so wanted to use them for something else. I placed them in the flower bed in the front yard and like the result. Instead of just outlining the flower bed, I arranged the stones close together on one end.

We are taking the next "step" as God leads our family. After months and months of having our house on the market, we received an offer and accepted it. So, we are now in the process of waiting for the buyer's loan approval, paperwork completion etc. Bobby and I both feel a sense of relief, in a way, knowing that we are moving to the next phase of this journey. We look forward to house hunting and can't wait to see how God leads in that area of our lives.

It will be sad to leave this lovely city that I know as home now. It will be so difficult to leave our wonderful church family. And, it will bring tears to leave family and friends here. But, we look forward to what awaits us, i.e. a new town, new church, and new friends.

"Lord, I am so thankful that You will go before us and lead the way."

Burrito Boy

A bean burrito from Taco Bell: Robby's favorite food.

Batting Practice

Today, Robby tried to teach Johnny how to hit the baseball off the tee. He actually hit it a couple times and was so proud of himself. I love how Robby cheers for him and is so encouraging.

Just like his golf swing, Johnny uses a one arm swing for baseball. Ha!

Robby had a fun time today and couldn't help but laugh at Johnny's silliness. What fun!

This time Johnny picked up the ball from the tee and ran. Robby laughed and laughed and enjoyed chasing him. I don't think Johnny can run unless his tongue is sticking out like this.

Lessons

"So this is a golf ball, huh?"

Robby giving golf lessons to Johnny. :) I love Johnny's one arm swing.

"No, like this!"

Robby can hit the ball left and right handed.

I think Robby is chewing him out for not hitting the ball correctly.

Well, he's going to hit it his own way. Ha! You go, Johnny!

Having a Moment

I can't remember why Johnny was crying. But, I'm sure it had something to do with him wanting something that he didn't have at the moment. :)

"Ok, I'm fine now, but just don't do that again!"
